Saturday I went to The Little Cafe Down the Street for the first time since losing my breast. The film-student barrista said, Do you have a cold, or are you just quiet?
I leaned over the counter and said, Actually, I had cancer surgery on Wednesday.
She said, I didn't hear about it. I hope it wasn't anything major.
They took off my left breast, I said. This is my first outing.
At least they got it all, she said.
I said, I'm going to have chemo. I'm going to be droopy for a couple of months.
Then you'll need a lot of coffee, she said.
We laughed.
