It's Cupcake Time

Wouldn't ya' know that the shop that sells the cupcake voted best in Southern California is practically in my back yard.

I'm back on the infamous "booty or bust" tour and, on a quest for calories, I decided to check out Polkatots Cupcakes. Go ahead. Take a sample at Open Mouth, Insert Fork.

return to work

I am returning to work today. I will be telecommuting; there are some people at work that might be a little under the weather. It will be good to start to work my way back into a normal routine I am experiencing at TV burnout (ESPN, CNN, HG, MSNBC....)

"not done yet" on blogher

For this blogger turned author, the BlogHer review of Not Done Yet was the among those for which I waited the most eagerly and with the most trepidation.

Denise Taunton, Community Manager (she also regularly blogs the Health and Wellness beat) was tasked with writing the review. Her post came out today:I am channelling Sally Field this evening.

"She (Denise Taunton, not Sally Field) likes me, she really likes me!" Or at least she really liked my book.

"I've read Not Just About Cancer for years and knew Laurie's story would make a compelling book, if she could only manage to pull the "right posts" and emotionally handle the process.

After reading the review copy of Not Done Yet, graciously sent to me by Laurie, I can say without reservation - she did it. She has written an excellent book."

You can read the rest of the review here.

I am thrilled (I celebrated with a glass of wine and a bubble bath, so forgive me if this is less than coherent).

Tomorrow, I am helping to escort 25 Grade Five students to the National Art Gallery. And I still haven't recovered from the week end (and literally running around with a sick 5 year old today). April is proving to be very, very busy. It feels so good to be able to complain about it.

Yesterday I saw an ad in the newspaper for the Kansas City Pet Expo, which will be held this weekend. I decided to check www.kcpetexpo.com to get more details and see if it would be worth taking WCK and Jay. I have to do my research from now on, because we once ended up at a Train Expo that was hugely expensive and hugely lame, and all three of us were hugely cranky by the end of it.

I don't think this will be the case with the Pet Expo. I think the Pet Expo will be worth every cent, even if we have to pay for parking. Yes, I discovered that one of the performing acts will be this:

That's right. A rock band made up of cats. I'm not going to be able to sleep all week, just thinking of it.

how much popeye before he becomes pop-eyed?

D. is getting a day off after the long week end because of a cold, which has him good spirits but coughing a lot (he insists it's "not a day off when you're sick!").

He is currently watching back-to-back black and white Popeye episodes from the 1930s (he has seen these many, many times and loves them) and I probably should go be a parent.

Here's a link to post that the wonderful Blondie wrote about my book. It really, really moved me.

Writing While 'Roiding

Last night I slept like a baby for 6.5 blissful, uninterrupted hours.

Darn.

After my near-sleepless but productive Sunday night, I had looked forward to continuing my writing streak. The marketing plan for a non-fiction book. A scene from my much-talked-about (by me) one-woman show. The grocery list. (Hey, with the way I have to eat these days, that's like writing a novella.)

It's probably just as well that I slept through the night. Trish had cautioned me about the possible perils of writing while on a jittery, steroid-induced high. Who knows what edgy, raw drivel I was churning out. But then the jerky wheels began to turn and I thought, "What if I create a flash fiction anthology blog for 'roid writers?"

I'd get submissions from eosinophil sufferers, asthmatics and arthritics, not to mention post-transplant patients. (No ball players; that's a different kind of steroid.) Was I on to something?

No, that just seemed a little too narrow. What if I opened up submissions to all insomniacs? I could call the blog the Night Writers instead of the 'Roid Writers.

Who isn't sleeping these days? The grieving. The lonely hearts. Parents of infants. Parents of teens. Any woman over 50.

And, of course, the crummy economy has been responsible for keeping countless eyes wide open in the middle of the night. A recent story in the LA Times about the growing use of sleeping pills ended with this line from a sleepless college student, "I'm stressed out about the rest of my life."

So, I guess the better question would be, "Who IS sleeping these days?"

Um, that would be me. Even with the 'roids.
